Inspired by the life and times of Amos Bennett, an early Black American settler, The Lake County Trilogy brings an overlooked chapter of history into view.
Bennett styled himself “the first white man to plant corn in Lake County.” The irony is that he was neither a white man nor the first to plant corn there. That contradiction opens a deeper conversation about our collective identity.
These stories combine historical fact with the possibilities of the imagination, following a life shaped—and ultimately cut short—by the Black codes.
